Useful Information

Are you aware that the Highway Code has been updated? Latest edition came out in September 2007. A new safety code has been included for novice drivers.

What do you think are the main reasons for young drivers being involved in an accident? How would you rate these answers -

Speed
Condition of car - brakes, tyres (and tyre pressure)
Weather conditions - damp, wet, icy
Road conditions - bends, undulations, pot holes etc
Driver attitude - including ability!
Closeness to other vehicles - use of the 2 second rule

Tyres & Brakes.

How many of you know what the correct pressure of your tyres should be? Where would you find this information? Did you know that the pressure depends on how many passengers you will be carrying and whether you are about to undertake a long journey involving sustained high speed on motorways?

Tyre pressures should be checked weekly and before a long journey. Also check the tyre walls for cuts and bulges. Remember, if you have to use your brakes harshly (in an emergency), all the weight and force of the car will go on those fronts tyres and any weaknesses will be shown. A blow out is not what you want!!

Low tyre pressure will also use up more fuel and upset the balance of the car when going round bends. Too high a pressure will not offer enough grip when braking and could result in losing control on a bend. Check those pressures!

Brakes are your lifeline so check that they work properly. When safe to do so, drive at a low speed (20mph) place your hands over the steering wheel lightly and apply the brakes. The car should continue in a straight line. If the steering pulls to one side then you should get your brakes checked.
